Offered for sale is an extremely clean, very original, mechanically strong 1972 Alfa Romeo 2000 GT Veloce that’s been well loved and cared for by the same owner for the past 45 years. Showing only 84k original miles and finished in rare and factory correct Piper Yellow (Giallo Piper) over a Black interior, the car was purchased new in San Francisco, however the original owner traded the car back in to the selling dealer a few months later in early 1973, at which point it was acquired by its long time owner with very few miles. He would use the car as a daily driver for decades, however because he lived and worked in the city and had only a short commute, he amassed relatively few miles per year. Always well maintained and garaged, the car became a cherished fair weather weekend driver later in its life until a few years ago, when a medical condition prevented the owner from being able to drive. Rather than see the car sit in his garage unused, with a heavy heart the owner decided to put it up for sale this spring, which is when he enlisted our services.

Having sat dormant for a few years, our first order of business was having the car gone through mechanically by Emilio Valsecchi Jr. of A&A Import Service here in Santa Barbara, a small independent shop that specializes in vintage Italian marques. In addition to basic service, the fuel system was cleaned and tuned, the ignition switch, coil and transmission mounts were all replaced. A&A also prepared a buyer’s report which is included, but a little hard to read. The report states the following:

  • Excellent example of a good original GTV, newish OEM exhaust, late model fuel pump.
  • Brake pads remaining – Front: 50%, Rear: 30%
  • Rear trailing arm bushings show little wear.
  • Rebuilt driveshaft but center support is now sagging.
  • Small rust bubbles on the left and right rockers behind the front wheels. The rest of the rockers and floors look great.
  • Right front fender replaced at some point – looks to be a nice job.
  • Transmission dust shield missing.
  • Engine, trans and differential show normal amount of seepage.
  • Compression results: 145, 150, 150, 150

The car just received new Uniroyal tires and is now not only road-worthy, but an absolute blast from behind the wheel. The Spica fuel injection is intact and freshly tuned, the car runs, tracks and brakes straight and true and the original DOHC Inline 4 cylinder engine starts effortlessly, idles consistently and pulls strongly and smoothly through each of the original 5-speed transmission’s gears.

Wonderfully era-specific and factory correct, the Piper Yellow paint is in good survivor condition, but does have its share of imperfections, all documented in the photos. The glass, rubber and brightwork are in great original shape and the body is straight, with factory consistent panel fits and gaps. The car’s interior is original except for the driver’s seat, which was reupholstered in the correct material years ago. The driver seat, rear seats, headliner and all of the interior panels are in excellent condition, however the passenger seat has split in a couple of places and the original dash has two typical cracks. The car has all of its wonderful original period stickers – our favorite being the warning that “the rear seats are not designated to be occupied by passengers when vehicle is in motion” – and the car comes with multiple sets of keys and its original owners manual.

The Tipo 105 is arguably the last Alfa to truly be considered a classic and the final iteration 2000 GTV embodies the perfect blend of more modern drivability and power while retaining all of the visceral thrill and charm of the earlier cars. Partially due to the rapid appreciation of other preceding Alfa models, partially due to the timeless Bertone design and partially due to the fact that relatively few solid examples remain, 2000 GTV values have been steadily on the rise, making this is an excellent opportunity to acquire a beautiful, solid, mechanically strong, fun-to-drive, appreciating classic that’s had effectively only one doting CA owner from new and is finished in a wonderful and uncommon livery. A wonderfully honest, charming survivor, this 2000 GTV needs nothing to provide its next owner another 45 years of enjoyment.
